Did you know that the Spokane Mountaineers started out in 1915 as the Spokane Walking Club and was an only women’s organization? Men were allowed to join the club in a controversial vote in 1916 and the name changed to the Spokane Mountaineers Club in 1921.

From the initial founding to the present time, the Club continually expanded to include more outdoor activities, additional educational opportunities and expanded support to conservation and protection of wilderness areas. We have the largest and most affordable Mountain educational programs in the PNW and are a completely volunteer-led organization.
Over the course of that evolution, the club achieved many milestones to include first ascents in the Cascades, Selkirks and Canadian Rockies and also sponsored climbing teams that conquered the world’s highest peaks.
We now include:
Climbing (Schools including: Mountain, Rock, Sport & Trad, High-Angle Rescue, Ice Climbing and Wilderness First Aid)
Hiking (Backpack School)
Skiing- Downhill, Nordic, Backcountry & Ski Mountaineering
Paddling
Biking (road and mountain)
The club’s Chalet that sits on 40 acres of club owned land on Mt. Spokane which is free to members to use.
The Conservation Committee is dedicated to the preservation of the Inland Northwest’s natural areas through a variety of protective initiatives. Much of this is possible through extensive local partnerships.
We also have a robust community of outdoor enthusiasts. Many climbs, hikes, and educational courses are posted on our website for you to join!
